Permission to slow down

Say Mercury retrograde and you will hear the sound of a thousand sphincters tightening. A few years ago, I didn’t even know what a retrograde was or why any planet does it. Now I understand and I watch for it because it is known to cause mischief. Retrograde is when a planet appears to be moving backwards which is actually an optical illusion but one with a lesson attached. That lesson is ‘slow down and stop putting things off’. Ignoring retrograde events are like not wearing sunscreen and being shocked when you get a sunburn.

During this retrograde, I took pains to follow up on my list of to-do’s. I made my 30K mile check-up for my vehicle and drove home so proud of myself for adulting. Then ~ fwump, fwump, fwump~ right front flat on a 7-month-old set of tires. Mercury said, “Good thing you renewed your AAA membership the last time I was here!” Then Mercury and I laughed and laughed because I was talking to a planet. Wasn’t so crazy when the man at the tire store old me I had Road Hazard Warranty and the tire would be replaced FOR FREE. Mercury gave me a high five and an I-told-you-so.

When that bad day turns into bad weeks, check the calendar. Unusual things happen during Mercury retrograde. Instead of getting pissed off, prepare for it like a zombie apocalypse or a visit from your Mother-in-law. Know when its coming and be ready, because anything you haven’t taken care of will be exposed like a bubble dancer dating an acupuncturist. Yeah, Mercury can be a jerk like that. OR, or, it can be like a really honest friend who reminds you to get the mammogram that saves your life. It’s all in how you look at it.

I choose to look at Mercury retrogrades like a gift from the universe. One that gives permission to slow down and take a breath. Not to go so fast. To be present and look around. Because if I don’t, whatever I’ve been ignoring will come out like bad sushi during a hangover.

Just remember, there is a RE in retrograde. Just like in RE-lax. RE-lease. RE-invent. RE-group. RE-vamp. RE-juvenate. And if you aren’t paying attention, well that’s just RE-diculous.
